just my opinion:
- amazing is ok
- nice is good -- it sounds sincere
- awesome sounds like you're sucking up to him
- brilliant just sounds kind of queer (I don't mean homosexual, i mean weird)
- pretty sounds like a word "that means something to girls" but I can tell you as a guy I have no idea what you mean
- cute is good, it sounds sincere
- beautiful makes you sound like it's the only smile you've ever seen and maybe you're a stalker
- gorgeous sounds a bit like a cross between beautiful and awesome (see above)
- wonderful is OK, but only if it's absolutely clear you're head over heels in love with him. Otherwise it makes you sound a bit like a stalker
- handsome.... ah... no.
I would add to the mix;
- friendly. I know that doesn't sound like over-the-top praise, but it's a bit like nice or cute... it's a compliment, but not ooshy-gooshy and stalkerish. And it sounds like you mean it. And it will make him feel good about himself, which translates into feeling good about you because you said it.
